Description

"I make fire red and white and pink and blue and green and black and plaid, all to die and float to the sky as rainbows behind the glitter and rhinestones that lacerate our eyes and splash girls' faces upon the earth and shatter the shells of butterflies, so in the end the dust will crack its veins open and spill out clotted soil, and the earth will bleed flowers once again to be loved and picked and tossed and spoiled, all upon that perfect grave, a hole in the heart of heaven's gem, a telescope to flames."

I actually started this piece in December, at the beginning of my winter break, during a surge of eagerness and restlessness and frustration with suddenly having nothing to do; then that all died down and I stopped being productive and nearly thought I might return to school with only a scrapped work-in-progress to show for it. Luckily, I whined enough about my time wasting that I finally returned to working and finished this. Hooray, self-ranting!

Done in Photoshop 7. Comments and critiques appreciated. :)

Thanks so much, everyone. I feel I followed the reference rather closely anatomy-wise. What about the nose do you think I should change, Diane?

Nice colors, I love the red. The shading around his eye could be improved maybe, as it looks very hallow atm. But the rest is great, and worth viewing from far. ;)

The perspective of the nose is a little bit exagerated ;) Look at the shape of the nostril, the shape is not exactly the same and that's what gives this aspect of distorted perspective. The "wrinkles" on the side of the nose are also a little bit too strong so they contribute to this overall effect.
The dark shadow under the eye makes the nose look a little bit shorter than on the ref.
I hope that I've explained clearly what I meant, it's a little bit hard to see since it's indeed very close to the ref, but I had noticed it before looking at the ref, so that was my first thought :)

Nothing major though ;)

Avatar Freiz

 01/17/07 @715

Thanks to everyone for all the kind comments; I'm really glad this got such positive feedback.

Ruxesurix, "please leave"? Why should I leave? If you don't like the piece, at least give a constructive critique for why, or if it's not a matter of fault within the work but one of your own personal taste, then don't comment at all. And the last thing you need to be doing is dropping insults or acting like you have the authority to say who should and shouldn't go.

To everyone else, thank you again. :)

You're one of the few people to give credit to the fact you used the photograph as a reference, bravo. So many people used this photo in photo manips without even a simple credit to a photograph they did not take and without knowledge they are indeed breaking the contract from the site in which they took it from. Very glad you did that in this day and age and yes just simply putting the link is enough. What work that you can attribute to is definitely the color, stroke and lighting. At that, they're very lovely and well done. I really love the color in this, you were not afraid of it. +10
